I finished the plus sign quilt this week. It's named itself "Positively Relative", which works for a couple of reasons...
- It's for my Aunt, one of my all-time favorite people.
- Everything is relative...I'm a firm believer that you cannot truly appreciate the positive without having experienced at least a bit of the negative...hence, the negative sign on the bottom row of the quilt!
Before I get to the quilty goodness, I want to give a shout out to the ladies who inspired this quilt. I first decided I wanted to make a plus sign quilt when I saw this quilt by Ashley @ Film in the Fridge. I mean, it's gorgeous, right?!?! Well, then I saw another beautiful plus sign quilt... this one by Debbie @ Esch House Quilts and just knew that I absolutely had to incorporate that negative sign into my quilt. Finally, I found measurements for a plus sign block here, by Rachel @ Wooden Spoon. Her measurements were perfect, because I wanted my plus signs a bit larger for this quilt. By the way, she also has measurements for a smaller block. Her plus sign quilt can be seen here and it is wonderful too! Also, check out her amazing wood grain quilting!,
Anyway, here is my version. The vital stats can be found here.
Models can be so difficult....
ME: "CJ! Look at Mommy!....No, CJ, look at me, not the squirrel!..."CJ! Over here!"HUBS: "Hurry up, Honey, we need to get back home. The Yankees are on!"
ME: "Dude. We have time. Settle down ....CJ! Look at Mommy!"
ME: "CJ! Look at ME, not the birds!......CJ, over here!...CJ, don't you want Mommy to get a good shot?"
HUBS: "Sarah. He's a dog, not a child. He doesn't care about your quilt."
ME: "Doug, you're wrong....CJ!...."
(this goes on for like 10 more minutes....)
HUBS: "Sarah, really?"
ME: (ignoring him): "CJ, baby, look at Mommy!"
HUBS: "Babe. It's a fail. Accept defeat."
ME: "I am quilter, not a quitter. Suck it up. I'm getting the shot!"
HUBS: "My arms are ready to fall off. Let's go."
ME: "Just one more minute. I promise."
ME: "Got it! That wasn't so bad was it, Honey?"
HUBS, shaking his head: "Whatever you say, Honey."
Here's a closeup of the center plus sign, since it's so hard to see. Also, you can get a better look at the quilting in this shot...simple straight lines. I stitched in the ditch around the blocks and then added in horizontal lines. I didn't mark the quilt because I didn't want them super straight; just sort of straightish...and I like it when my lines aren't all the exact same distance apart.
I love that print. In fact, the entire Comma collection rocks. I have enough left over to make another lap quilt, and I might just end up keeping that one for myself.
And here's a close up of the binding. I had planned on going with solid black, but I ended up using my black in another quilt so I went scrappy. I like it.
And, because I love it so much, I'm going to show off my label again. I ordered these from Ananemone on Etsy. I found out about these labels from Ashley @ Wasn't Quilt in a Day and Jenni @Quasi-Quilter...Thanks Ladies!
